I was saddened to read the story of Peter Smedley a millionaire who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2000. This put him on a quest to end his life at his choosing and the BBC kindly filmed it too. I appreciate how difficult it must be to know that your body will slowly deteoriate and no-one would choose that. But there is one major factor that people are overlooking and that is what happens in the moments when you’re dying. It seems to me pride and the arrogance of man has got in the way of finding a way to God. It is in our suffering we cry out to God. I heard J Piper talk on difficulties; it will either do one of two things and that is draw you towards God or push you away. Thats the crux of it. All men will have to choose in this life to accept or reject God. Only God knows our future and the number of days we live. God is the only one who knows the heart of man. Those who choose to end their life like Mr Smedley are making a choice to also reject God, the giver of life. We are not the master of our own destiny but to think so will lead ultimately to death.
Prov 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
